He began acting with Earthlight Theater – street theatre at
its finest - in 1970 touring the United States and playing Off-Broadway New York.
He immersed himself in the study of oriental philosophy before immigrating
to Europe where he studied contemporary ballet, mask theatre and voice. Douglas began
exploring the world of the written text in Paris in 1987 when he created Theatre Kayonan.
Theatre Kayonan presents works by English-language authors in French
and in English for the international audience.
The kayonan represents the tree of life in Balinese shadow
theatre. Its twirling dance opens and closes each show. Without the kayonan,
there is no theatre. Douglas Fowley Jr. chose this symbol for his work.
